The Lancaster Museum of Art and History (MOAH) will host a presentation titled A Life in Stitches: Understanding Mental Health through Art History on Sunday, June 8 from 2 to 4 p.m.  It will be presented by Sanie Andres, a director of the Lancaster Museum and Public Art Foundation (LMPAF). The presentation will include an interpretation of Andrew Frieder: A Life in Stitches, which is part of the current exhibit on display at MOAH through June 8, 2014.

Andrew Frieder: A Life in Stitches showcases a collection of works created by Andrew Frieder, an Antelope Valley artist, during the last 10 years of his life. The show includes works on paper, stitched collages and paper quilts that provides a glimpse into his unique and compelling visual language. His works on paper draw the viewer into his creative mind with visual stories that combine human and animal figures with scriptural references and Greek mythology. Traditional patch quilting and collage are merged into one by using hand-made aluminum staples along with grommets, embroidery thread and machine-stitched prints. This technique reflects his father’s background in medicine and his mother’s background in the garment industry.

Despite living with a mental illness, Andrew Frieder (1959-2014) was one of the Antelope Valley’s most prolific artists. Although he was primarily self-taught, he did study for a period of time at UCLA and Bennington College in Vermont. During his lifetime, he created thousands of prints, drawings, collages, quilted works, hand-made tools, printing presses, hats and furniture. Currently, MOAH’s permanent collection houses three of Frieder’s works.

Sanie Andres, MFT, ATR, has a Masters degree in Psychology and Art Therapy and specializes in using art to help those living with schizophrenia and other challenging conditions. His presentation is scheduled to take place on June 8 as part of the closing reception of the current round of shows.

MOAH is located at 665 W. Lancaster Blvd. Regular museum hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Thursday. The museum is closed on Mondays and holidays. Additional information and donation support opportunities are available.
