Spots open for Palmdale Lifeguard Academy

Palmdale’s Recreation and Culture department is offering a Lifeguard Academy that will begin Friday, Feb. 21 at Marie Kerr Pool, located at 2723 Rancho Vista Blvd.

The Lifeguard Academy is designed to train individuals with emergency and lifesaving skills. Seasonal lifeguard applicants must be at least 17 years old by May 1, 2014 and be able to swim at least 300 yards continuously. Participants who successfully complete requirements will receive certification necessary to apply for a summer job at the city’s three swimming pools and at the DryTown Water Park.

The academy will be held on Friday evenings 6 to 9 p.m. and all day Saturdays and Sundays during scheduled dates. Lifeguard Academy will begin on Friday, Feb. 21 and run until Sunday, March 9. The cost is $80 for residents and $96 for non-residents. There is a mandatory meeting for registered participants on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. at Marie Kerr Pool and space is limited.

The fee does not include supplies or certification fee. The supplies needed, a pocket mask, may be purchased at the American Red Cross of the Antelope Valley, located at 2715 Rancho Vista Blvd in Palmdale.
