Power Outage (55002)

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., — Power was restored today to nearly all Southern California Edison (SCE) customers in El Segundo whose electrical service was interrupted when a suspected drunk driver slammed a car into a light pole early on New Year’s Day, authorities said.

The crash, which occurred about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday near El Segundo Boulevard and Sheldon Street, initially caused 4,337 customers across a wide swath of the city to lose power.

SCE crews restored service to most of them within about six hours, but as of late Wednesday, the outage still affected 598 customers, SCE spokesman Amado Zavala said. Service was restored to all but two customers by about 6:45 this morning, Zavala said.

The area affected by the outage was bounded by Imperial Highway on the north, Illinois Street on the east, El Segundo Boulevard on the south and Hillcrest Street on the west, SCE reported.
