LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A convicted bank robber who was on probation when he held up a Cerritos bank in July pleaded guilty today to one count of bank robbery.
Gregory Lynn Cross, 57, of Los Angeles, entered the plea to stealing about $1,544 on July 16 from a Comerica Bank branch on South Street in Cerritos, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
In that holdup, Cross passed a note to the teller that said, “This is a robbery. Give me the cash now,” according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.
He also told the teller, “No dye packs,” referring to money rigged with red dye that explodes as the thief escapes.
Cross previously served six years in federal prison for bank robbery and had been on supervised release for less than two years when he robbed the Cerritos bank.
A sentencing date was not immediately available.
Cross was nicknamed the “Overweight Bandit” by the FBI after witnesses described the suspect as “husky,” according to the FBI. He was suspected of a string of bank robberies in 2005.
