No GMOs.

That’s the message from Los Angeles City Councilmen Paul Koretz and Mitch O’Farrell, who introduced a motion today to ban the growing or selling of genetically modified seeds or plants in Los Angeles.

“A growing number of problems” have been traced to genetically modified organisms, “including the worldwide disappearance of honeybees,” according to a statement released by the two councilmen.

“Los Angeles has a healthy honeybee population and we want to keep it that way,” O’Farrell said.

The two lawmakers blamed a well-funded campaign by “pesticide and junk food companies” with last November’s defeat of statewide Proposition 37, which would have required genetically modified food be labeled as such.

Koretz and O’Farrell also called on their council colleagues to support Washington state ballot initiative 522, which calls for genetically engineered food products to be properly labeled in that state.

“The pesticide and junk food companies deceived Californians with their Prop. 37 misinformation campaign, and now, with initiative 522, they’re using the same dirty tricks to deceive Washington voters,” Koretz said. “Enough is enough.”
