The Palmdale City Library, located at 700 E. Palmdale Blvd., will host a book signing for local author Nickie V. Smith on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Smith will be singing copies of her book, “Sergeant Benjamin Premiers and Family.” Copies will be available for purchase at the Library.

“Sergeant Benjamin Premiers and Family” begins with a United States Flag given to Volette Nicole Premiers, the wife of Air Force Sergeant Benjamin Premiers after he was killed in Iraq. With her husband now deceased, Volette is forced to move off of the military base. On the amount of income she will receive from her husband being in the military with two sons, Donta’ and Carl, she is concerned about how she will be able to make ends meet.

Volette takes a job as a secretary and moves to the inner city of Chicago. Donta’, a gifted young man soon to start college at the age of sixteen, will receive the benefits of his father’s veteran pay. Carl is five years old and was born with a growth disorder. Although his mind and clarity appeared to be developing at the normal rate of a five-year-older, his body growth is extremely small.

Upon the move to Chicago, gang members attacked five-year-old Carl, leaving him for dead. These terrible acts of terrorism and crimes against her son left Volette no choice but to reconnect with her martial arts background and to network with 25 members of an elicit military special force team, trained by her late husband Sergeant Premiers.

The Palmdale City Library is open seven days a week. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m; Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m to 5 p.m; and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
