LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A teenage boy was hospitalized today after being shot in the face in a drive-by attack as he rode his bicycle in South Los Angeles, police said.

The shooting in the 3600 block of Ruthelen Street was reported around 11:40 p.m. Monday, said Sgt. Daniel Ellerson of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Southwest Station, adding that is is believed to have been gang-related.

The victim, who is in his late teens, was riding a bike in front of his residence when a vehicle rolled by and at least one person inside fired four to six rounds, one of which struck him in the face, Ellerson said. The boy was taken to California Hospital Medical Center with stable vital signs, he said.

A description of the vehicle was not available, he said.

Police believe the shooting may have been gang-related based on “the type of friends the victim had with him” when he was shot, Ellerson said.
