LOS ANGELES, Calif. — CicLAvia, the group that clears the streets for bicycle riders, skaters and walkers, was awarded a $500,000 grant by the Wasserman Foundation today.

The grant, the nonprofit’s biggest to date, will be used for 2014-2015 events, CicLAvia spokesman Rob Gard said.

Most of CicLAvia’s money has come from public sources, such as the city of Los Angeles, and Gard said the Wasserman Foundation grant shows that others recognize the benefits.

“It’s a huge boost for us financially and it does help strengthen the belief that CicLAvia and CicLAvia-type events are best driven by public-private partnerships,” he said.

The organization also received a $50,000 grant from the Wasserman Foundation earlier this year and a $100,000 “LA2050” grant from the Goldhirsh Foundation.

For the “Heart of L.A.” CicLAvia event, set for Oct. 6, Spring Street and Broadway will be closed in downtown Los  Angeles, as will sections of First, Fourth, Seventh and Ninth streets. That will provide about 7.5 miles of car-free roads.
