LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A man who apparently shot and wounded his estranged wife in southwest Los Angeles today was shot to death by police who responded to the scene.

The woman, who was shot in an ear, was hospitalized but was considered to be stable.

Police and paramedics responded around 9:25 a.m. to a home in the 4000 block of Normandie Avenue on a report of an assault with a deadly weapon, according to Los Angeles police Sgt. Albert Gonzalez. Officers who arrived at the scene found a man armed with a handgun, and police wound up fatally shooting the man, police said.

Neighbors told reporters at the scene that the man and woman were both in their 70s and were in the midst of a divorce.

Although police said the husband was armed, it was not immediately clear what prompted police to open fire, or if the man fired any shots at the officers.

When officers were sent to the scene, an “officer needs help” call was issued on police radio frequencies. Police said an LAPD officer was injured in a traffic crash in the general area of 57th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard, but it was unclear if the officer was responding to the shooting.
