More than 40 students, ages 8-16, were taught the fundamental skills of the visual arts through drawing, math, science and technology at the Lancaster Museum of Art and History’s first Young Artist Summer Camp.
The camp was held on two sessions—July 22-26 and July 29-Aug. 6—and has been proclaimed a huge success, with both weeks selling out.
Each day, different art techniques and materials were introduced and explored, from pencils to watercolors to the use of collage with everyday items.
The museum (MOAH) has established a number of art courses, including the Summer Story and Activity Series and the Open Studio Workshop. For students 16 years old to adults, the Open Studio Workshops offer artists an opportunity to hone their skills or try new techniques in any media. The Open Studio classes are offered on Aug. 23 as a one-day workshop, and as a four-week class on Saturdays from Sept. 7–28.
The Open Studio classes will continue throughout the year. The Summer Story and Activity Series is open to children 3 to 10 years old and will be offered again on Sept. 12.
These workshops, the Young Artist Camp and each of the summer introductory level youth arts and performance courses were supported by a Summer Arts Education Grant provided by Edison International. The grant has allowed course fees to be discounted 30 percent for registrants, and they are offered on a first-come, first-served basis while funding is available.
