LANCASTER, Calif. — An investigation was underway today into cockfighting at a property in an unincorporated area near Lancaster where deputies served a search warrant and found guns, drugs and 27 roosters.

The warrant was served at 10 a.m. Thursday in the 48000 block of 105th Street East, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. John Voza.

Deputies seized four handguns, two rifles, one pound of marijuana and 27 fighting and breeding roosters, Voza said.

“The birds appeared to be in good shape, but had been prepped for fighting, by cutting their wattles and combs,” he said. Wattles and combs are flap-like tissues attached to the chickens’ heads and throats.

Two suspects were taken into custody for misdemeanor warrants not related to the cockfighting, he said.

Department of Children and Family Services personnel were called and interviewed 10 children, but none were taken into protective custody, Voza said.

The arrested suspects were 31-year-old Luis A. Juarez and 23-year-old Richard Aguirre, he said. Both men are from Lancaster.

Juarez was jailed on a no-bail hold and Aguirre was being held in lieu of $31,000 bail, Voza said.
