LAWNDALE, Calif. — An electrical fire damaged a house in Lawndale this morning and killed at least one cat, authorities said.

The blaze in the one-story single-family home at 4208 167th St., just east of Hawthorne Boulevard, was reported at 3:19 a.m. and was knocked down in less than 20 minutes, said Rey Dong, supervising dispatcher with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

There were 10 cats in the house, the homeowner told a news photographer at the scene. Three of the felines were rescued, one was carried out of the house dead by a firefighter and six others were unaccounted for.

The fire destroyed the rear of the home. One of the homeowners said he woke up and found the back porch engulfed in flames.

Capt. Michael Jackson with county fire’s investigation unit said the cause of the fire was determined to be electrical. A damage estimate was not immediately released.
