LEIMERT PARK, Calif. — A toddler was hospitalized today with a hand wound she suffered when her mother’s SUV came under gunfire in the Leimert Park section of South Los Angeles.

The vehicle was shot at in the area of 43rd Place and Eighth Avenue around 11:55 p.m. Thursday, said Sgt. Daniel Ellerson of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Southwest Station.

The victim’s mother said she was driving an SUV with two children secured in child seats when she heard seven shots, Ellerson said.

She didn’t think the vehicle was being targeted, but as she got to the area of Martin Luther King Jr. and Crenshaw boulevards, she realized a round had struck her 2-year-old daughter in a hand, then pulled over and called authorities, he said.

The child was taken to a hospital in stable condition, Ellerson said.

It was not immediately clear if the SUV was targeted and who did the shooting. An investigation was under way.
