The official filing period for the Palmdale Nov. 5, 2013, general municipal election for the seats of mayor and two councilmembers will open on Monday, July 15, and will close on Friday, Aug. 9, at 5 p.m.

The term for mayor is two years and the councilmember terms are four years.

If nomination papers for an incumbent officer of the city are not filed by Aug. 9, (the 88th day before the election) the voters shall have until the 83rd day before the election, Aug. 14, 2013, to nominate candidates other than the person(s) who are the incumbents for that office. This extension is not applicable where there is no incumbent eligible to be elected.

If no one or only one person is nominated for an elective office, appointment to the elective office may be made as prescribed by § 10229, Elections Code of the State of California.

Candidate election handbooks will be available during the nomination period for the candidates or their designee that include the official filing papers and election information. Those wishing to take out papers must be a registered voter and live within the boundaries of Palmdale.

Candidates are encouraged to make an appointment with the city clerk at (661) 267-5151 for taking out and filing of official papers. This will ensure that quality time is set aside for the procedures that need to be followed. Names of candidates who have taken out papers and those who have filed papers will be available on a daily basis.

The city clerk’s department is open Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-6 p.m. and closed Fridays except Aug. 9, when the department will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accept the return of nomination papers.

For more information, call City Clerk Rebecca Smith at (661) 267-5151.
