The seventh annual Leimert Park Village Book Fair will feature a special tribute to the 1960s beginning at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 29, on the Leimert Park Vision Theatre back lot, 4318 Degnan Blvd.

The theme of the free book fair is “The 1960s–America’s Era of Social Change,” and among the planned activities are panel discussions with Black Panthers such as storyteller Michael McCarthy, Roland Freeman and Wayne Pharr, moderated by Joshua Bloom, author of a book on the history and politics of the Black Panthers.

Another panel discussion will feature freedom riders, including former Los Angeles Councilman Robert Farrell and Robert and Helen Singleton. Donzaleigh Abernathy, daughter of civil rights icon the Rev. Ralph Abernathy, will moderate.

A re-enactment focusing on the treatment of sanitation workers in Alabama called “I Am a Man” is also planned.

Musical selections include a Jimi Hendrix look-alike, who will perform “Machine Gun,” a special tribute to Sam Cooke and his song “A Change Is Gonna Come” and a tribute to the civil rights-era music created by Stax and Motown. This also includes 4 p.m. panel discussion with noted musical legends and an exhibition by the Memphis-based Stax Museum.

Finally, there will be a tribute to the U.S. military with the Annenberg Space Museum.

Additionally, the book fair will honor the late James Baldwin, as its Legacy Honoree; and feature actors/writers Victoria Rowell, Eriq LaSalle and Judge Mablean Ephriam in the author’s tent.

Other features include publishers row, museum row, a poets performance stage, storytelling for children and five literary pavilions.

Founded in 2006 by Cynthia E. Exum, the book fair is produced in partnership with the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, the city and county of Los Angeles and Eso Won Bookstore.
