DOWNEY, Calif. — The city of Downey was one of 10 communities named 2013 All-America Cities by the National Civic League at its meeting Sunday in Denver, Colo.

“Since 1949, the awards program has recognized more than 650 communities for addressing local challenges with innovative, grassroots strategies that promote civic engagement and cooperation between the public, private and nonprofit sectors,” the NCL said in a press release.

This year’s awards had a special focus on communities that implemented programs to recognize or assist veterans and military families, the release stated.

Downey was the only west coast community to win the honor for outstanding civic achievement and one of only two western cities, along with Montrose, Colo.

Other winners included Birmingham, Ala.; Dubuque, Iowa; Dunn, N.C.; Thomasville, N.C.; Peoria, Ill.; Owensboro, Ky.; Garner, N.C.; and Norfolk, Va.

The designation gives winning communities “bragging rights” that can help them recruit new businesses, increase jobs and obtain grants for community betterment projects, according to the NCL website.
