The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) will hold a special meeting to review the district’s $6.1 billion budget Tuesday June 4 beginning at 9 a.m.
Additional testimony being taken at 5 p.m. by Board member Bennett Kayser to allow for greater input from working parents, community members and employees. Both will take place in the boardroom located at 333 S. Beaudry Ave., Los Angeles.
Morning speakers will include State Board of Education Member Sue Burr, who is speaking on behalf of Gov. Jerry Brown and his proposed Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). Dennis Meyers CAE, assistant executive director of the California School Board Association will address overall education funding in California; Alex Cherniss, Ph.D., chief business ffficer from the Los Angeles County Office of Education will focus on schools in the County; and Megan Reilly, LAUSD chief financial officer will then present information on LAUSD’s budget. LAUSD Director of Government Relations, Edgar Zazueta, will be available for questions on lobbying strategies around the LCFF.
“If a society is measured by how it treats the least among us, it is right and just for California legislators to support the Local Control Funding Formula with the Governor’s full concentration factor for our neediest children in the state’s neediest school districts,” notes Kayser. “We cannot sit on the sidelines and let pass this historic opportunity to change kid’s lives. It is critical that the people of this community learn just how important the governor’s plan is to the social and economic future of Los Angeles.”
“The meetings are also a means for LAUSD board members to solicit public input with regard to community priorities. In light of taxpayer support for Proposition 30, now is a good time to seek guidance. California is currently 49th in the nation in per pupil funding,” Bennett said.
Board Members will vote to finalize the LAUSD budget at the district’s June 18 meeting.
