LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Los Angeles Clippers fired coach Vinny Del Negro today, even though he guided the team to a franchise-record 56 victories and the first division championship in its 43-season history.

“We would like to thank Vinny for everything he did during his three years with the organization,” Clippers Vice President of Basketball Operations Gary Sacks said. “Vinny helped this team win a Pacific Division title and we greatly appreciate all that he and his staff helped accomplish. This was a difficult decision, but we felt this is the best decision for our franchise moving forward.”

Del Negro’s contract expires June 30.

The firing comes 18 days after the Clippers’ season ended with a loss to the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

Del Negro coached the Clippers to a 128-102 record in three seasons, including playoff berths in each of the final two seasons.
