Kerry Washington: Im the luckiest broad in Hollywood

Kerry Washington has long been a star on the big screen, but with ABC’s “Scandal” she’s now also one of the hottest stars on TV.

The 36-year-old is reveling in her moment, as she tells Elle magazine in its June issue that she’s “the luckiest broad in Hollywood now.”

“To be the lead actor on ‘Scandal’ and to be in the highest-earning [Quentin] Tarantino movie [‘Django Unchained’], I don’t get to ask for more.”

Funnily enough, Washington didn’t plan on becoming an actress.

“I imagined I’d be a clinical psychologist, with a focus on how performance shapes identity. I’d figure out ways to use role-playing in the healing of people,” she tells Elle. “I was not that girl. I was a kooky theater kid, silly and goofy and academic.”

These days, Washington isn’t known for her silly side as much as she’s known for her stunning red carpet looks, which have consistently landed her on best-dressed lists. As it turns out, the star approaches her awards show fashion with the same creative vision she brings to her on-screen roles.

“I found out I enjoy the process. All these people show up at my house, they all have kits, someone has dresses. And it’s like, Let’s have fun,” Washington says. “It’s not all about me. We’re able to create stories on the red carpet.”

To check out Elle’s full interview with Kerry Washington, keep an eye out for the June issue of the magazine, on newsstands May 21.
