COMPTON, Calif. — Authorities arrested a man who allegedly tried today to kidnap a woman in Carson and then led deputies on a chase to the Athens Village area, where his car crashed into an SUV at an intersection and burst into flames.

Lawrence Dickerson, 36, was arrested following the crash, which occurred near Avalon Boulevard and 135th Street about 6:30 a.m., according to the sheriff’s department.

Dickerson had allegedly tried to kidnap a woman a few minutes earlier at a shopping center in the 600 block of East University Drive, and employees of a store saw what was happening and called 911.

“The victim reported that a complete stranger tried to kidnap her,” according to a sheriff’s statement. “As deputies arrived on scene, the suspect fled in his car. Deputies went in pursuit of the suspect vehicle. The pursuit ended … when the suspect collided with another civilian vehicle.”

The crash caused the SUV to overturn, and the woman behind the wheel was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
