Local students win Black engineers contest

Two local students from Compton, pictured from left, Michael Simpson and Robert Butler III, as well as Breeland Abrams and Waldo Felix of Carson, led the California Academy of Math Science (CAMS) Pre-College Initiative (PCI) Team to a first-place finish at the National Amazing Race Math Edition Competition held in Indianapolis, Ind. during the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) spring conference. The goal of the NSBE’s Amazing Race program is to increase the math skills of Black students in preparation for standardized testing as well as success in college engineering and technology majors. In the fall, each team was given a series of assignments to complete in the months leading up to the NSBE national convention, and then at the confab were given other tasks to complete.
