Bradley, Brown headed for Compton mayor runoff

COMPTON, Calif. — Despite facing criminal charges, it appears that former Compton Mayor Omar Bradley will get a chance to reclaim his old job during a June 4 runoff election.

According to an unofficial tally from Tuesday’s election, urban planner and political newcomer Aja Brown topped the field of 12 candidates seeking the mayor’s office, collecting 1,601 votes, or 27.8 percent. Bradley was second with 1,509 votes, or 26.2 percent.

Incumbent Eric Perrodin had 1,443 votes, or 25 percent.

Nearly 1,200 ballots still need to be tallied, so the results could ultimately change. But if the results hold, Brown and Bradley will compete in the June runoff for the right to replace Perrodin.

Brown, who called for fresh faces at City Hall in light of a growing budget deficit, had some high-powered supporters during the campaign, most notably county Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas.

Bradley, once known as the “gangster mayor,” is awaiting retrial on corruption charges stemming from his last time in office. He was convicted and sent to prison nearly 10 years ago for misuse of thousands of dollars in public funds, but his conviction was overturned last year. He said he wants his job back, and insisted the city ran smoothly under his watch.
