LOS ANGELES, Calif. — A 60-year-old woman was ordered today to stand trial for the shooting death of her 79-year-old aunt, who was the mother of a Los Angeles Police Department training officer.

Barbara Jean Davenport is charged with murder and robbery in connection with the June 2, 2012, slaying of Cleo Hughes.

The murder charge includes the special circumstance allegation that Hughes was killed during a robbery or attempted robbery.

Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek a death sentence for Hughes, who is due back in Los Angeles Superior Court for arraignment April 30.

Hughes’ body was discovered about 11:50 a.m. June 3, 2012, at a home in the 1600 block of West 66th Street, between Western and Normandie avenues in South Los Angeles, police said.

The LAPD officer had driven to his mother’s house to check on her after not being able to reach her by telephone, according to police. He found her in her bedroom.

Davenport was charged July 13 with her aunt’s murder. She remains jailed without bail.
