Carson Sister Cities Association (CSCA) is seeking host families for Japanese students who will be visiting from Soka City, Japan, in the summer.

Six students, accompanied by a chaperone, will visit the city from July 21 through Aug. 4. Volunteer families would open their homes to the delegates for one or both weeks of the visit.

The Sister Cities Student Exchange Program takes place every four years. Carson has hosted more than a hundred students from Soka ever since the two cities began their relationship in 1989.

Activities for the delegation include excursions and educational tours during the day. The delegates are expected to spend most evenings and weekends with their host families.

All host families must be members or become members of CSCA by filling out an application form available at the Public Information Office, located at Carson City Hall, 701 E. Carson St. The approval process will include a confidential law enforcement background check. For more information, please call (310) 952-1740.

The city is also accepting nominations for the 2013 Leaves of Carson volunteer recognition program in which those who live or work in the city, or local-based organizations, are recognized for their contributions as volunteers in the Carson community.

Seven categories are open for nomination, including business, education, public safety, public sector, Carson resident, nonprofit organization and posthumous category. The program is open for residents, as well as for individuals who devote unpaid, volunteer hours in the community.

Awardees will be recognized at a presentation in October, and each will get a leaf bearing their names on the Carson Tree, which is displayed at the Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center.

All awardees, with the exception of the posthumous award, which is chosen by the City Council, are to be selected by a panel of judges composed of city commissioners, committee and board chairpersons, based on the information provided by the nominating party.

Nomination forms are now available at the Public Information Office, 701 E. Carson St. All nomination forms must be received by 6 p.m. on July 24, 2013.

For eligibility requirements and other information, or to request a nomination form, please contact the Public Information Office at (310) 952-1740.
