According to numerous reports, at least 26, but possibly as many as 30 individuals, were killed on Friday morning in a shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. At least 20 of the deceased were children between the ages of 5 and 9-years-old.

One state official said that the 24-year-old gunman, who has now been identified as Ryan Lanza, was found dead in the Sandy Hook Elementary School, possibly at his own hand. The gunman was in possession of at least three firearms, the official said. There was some speculation that there were two gunmen involved.

It was reported that Lanza’s mother Nancy was a teacher at the school and was among those killed in the shooting, and early reports say that Lanza may have also killed his brother at a residence in Hoboken, N.J., approximately 80 miles away from Newtown.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy arrived at the scene of the shooting and has since been consoling the families and faculty.

President Barack Obama addressed the nation through shielded tears and offered his condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

The school, is located in Fairfield County, 12 miles east of Danbury, and serves kindergarten through fourth grade. The school reportedly has about 700 students.
