LOS ANGELES, CALIF.,- The Board of Supervisors today renewed a $10,000 reward for information in the slaying of a 14-year-old girl who was shot while watching 4th of July fireworks in unincorporated West Athens.

Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas recommended extending the reward, which was set to expire on Oct. 8. About 10:20 p.m. on Independence Day, witnesses saw two men fire several shots into a crowd in front of 1346 W. 97th St. that included Unique Russell and two of the mortally wounded teen’s cousins, 12-year-old Rekell Reeves and Freddy Pickett, 25. They both suffered leg wounds.

The shooting suspects were described by police as black men about 18 to 25 years old. One was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and the other was wearing a white T-shirt. At a news conference two days after the shooting, Russell’s mother, Donna Wade, begged neighbors for information.

“We have a code around here — nobody say anything — and because of
that our kids are dying,” Wade said. “So, how many of our kids have to die to
uphold a war? A war that doesn’t exist. It’s in our minds…. There’s
casualties on both sides and nobody’s going to win.”

Anyone with information was asked to call sheriff’s Sgt. Kenneth Perry
or Detective Gary Sloan at (323) 890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
