Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will join members of the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education, Superintendent Dr. John E. Deasy, officials and special guests to celebrate the first day of school and the opening of 20 new schools in the city at Hilda L. Solis Learning Academy, 319 N. Humphreys Ave., Los Angeles, at 10 a.m.

The new schools are part of LAUSD’s $19.5 billion New School Construction and Modernization Program to provide a safe and healthy neighborhood school on a traditional, two-semester calendar for every student. To date, the district has completed 129 new schools and approximately 24,000 modernization projects, making LAUSD’s building program the largest public works program since the Interstate Highway System.
