Event pushes heart-healthy lifestyle

The second annual Powerful Black Family Celebration hosted by the American Heart Association will be held Saturday from noon-3 p.m. at the Van Ness Recreation Center, 5720 Second Ave. in Los Angeles. The event will feature educational, life-improving activities as well as tributes to former UCLA Bruin Walt Hazzard and Pastor Billy Ingram. Both died of cardiovascular disease.

The goal of the celebration is to  empower African Americans with information and tools to live healthier lives in light of the fact that heart disease is the number one killer in Los Angeles County and claims the lives of more African Americans than all cancers combined.

Among the planned activities are free health screenings and a hands-on CPR demonstration; a segment that will show participants how to begin a simple vegetable garden; and fitness demonstrations.

Additionally, a Ladies Lounge will feature information sessions geared especially for women including maintaining your hairstyle while incorporating exercise into your life.

The Men’s Cave will include a golf clinic and cover topics such as financial health.

Finally, a farmer’s market will feature a selection of fresh fruits and vegetables and will include a chef preparing healthy recipes.
