Aeronautical Museum to launch Summer of Flight

To address the historically low math and science test scores in the Compton area, Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum (TAM) is launching Aero Squad Summer of Flight, the first of three 10-week classes annually, which will use actual flight time and pilot training to encourage students to explore math, science and engineering while improving their attitudes toward school. TAM has been awarded a two-year grant of $60,000 by the California Community Foundation through its Preparing Achievers for Tomorrow (PAT) initiative to improve academic achievement, decision-making skills, and self-esteem of youth in South Los Angeles through aviation recreation and to build its organizational capacity to sustain these services.

Students will learn the fundamentals of flying in TAM’s state of the art Flight Simulator Sky Lab, experience the thrill of flight with FAA Certified Flight Instructors, have opportunities to hear guest speakers, and go on field trips designed to inspire students to pursue careers in aviation technology and engineering with companies like SpaceX, Boeing, NASA JPL and more.

Partners on this project include AmeriCorps VISTAs (Volunteers in Service to America), Compton High School, and Compton Unified School District. VISTAs, who are full-time public service members, will help coordinate recruitment, provide curriculum development, and strengthen evaluation practices in close consultation with Compton High staff.

Recruiting will kick off with a Positive Vibrations Assembly on Thursday, April 26, at Compton High School. Application forms will be available. Families are also invited to learn more at TAM’s open house on Saturday, April 28, and during the Arts & Aviation Career Expo on Saturday, May 5. Please contact Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum for more information on enrollment.
