In celebration of Black History month, a new Broadway-caliber musical will be staged at the West Angeles Church of God in Christ Theatre Feb. 11, at 3 and 7 p.m.

NuBiAh’s theme is “Listen to the Drum,” and this musical production passionately dramatizes the history of African kings and queens, with a focus on the strong principles and character traits that made them legendary.

Executive producer and artistic director Tommy Jones’ impetus for writing the musical was a desire to give African American children, youth and young adults a keener sense of identity and self-worth. By helping the audience understand the best of their history, he seeks to transform their consciousness and inspire them to find their passion and reach their fullest potential.

“Reaching out to youth and building their self-esteem is the first step toward interrupting the cycle of destruction that exists within the inner city. We can influence our children’s behavior by reinforcing positive values, attitudes and beliefs,” says Jones.

NuBiAh is based on a bedtime story and coloring book written by Jones, entitled “NuBiAh: Land of African Kings and Queens.” (The book and other souvenirs and performance-related items are available for individual or bulk purchase at play’s website.)

The play features original choreography and score and through the powerful mediums of dance, rhythm, spoken-word “poetry” and music, NuBiAh communicates an uplifting, character-building message. Its cast is comprised of talented professionals who want to inspire others to find their passion and follow their dream.

NuBiAh is being sponsored by the Curtis (Farmers®) Agency, one of Inglewood’s foremost insurance and financial services companies; Julia’s Hair Weev Salon, a legendary Los Angeles salon celebrating its grand re-opening year; and Our Weekly.

Advanced individual ticket prices are $20 and may be purchased at www.nubiah.org/performances. Tickets for children 12 and under are $10. Tickets are $25 at the door. Group discounts and sponsorships are available. All attendees are invited to wear African clothing.

All NuBiAh assets and materials are produced under the auspices of Urban City Youth (UCY), a 501(c)3 certified, non-profit organization that develops and presents enrichment programs for inner city youth. For more information on Urban City Youth, please visit www.urbancityyouth.org.
