WESTMINSTER, Calif.–A Lowe’s home improvement store in Westminster is among 20 slated for closure across the country, the company announced today.

The store at 13225 Beach Blvd. is on the list of under-performing stores in 15 states targeted for closure. Lowe’s executives also announced they are scaling back the number of planned store openings from 30 per year to 10 to 15 in 2012.

“Closing stores is never easy, given the impact on hard-working employees and local communities,” said the company’s chief executive, Robert A. Niblock. “However, we have an obligation to make tough decisions when necessary to improve profitability and strengthen our financial position.”

The store closings will lead to about 1,950 employees being laid off across the country, according to the company.
