Dodgers to honor military, law enforcement, firefighters

LOS ANGELES, Calif.–Members of the armed forces, law enforcement and fire departments will be honored during pregame ceremonies at Dodger Stadium tonight as the team conducts Heroes Night.

Representatives of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol, Los Angeles Fire Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department will throw out a simultaneous ceremonial first pitch before the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Helicopters from the Los Angeles city and county fire departments will fly over the stadium at the start of the game.

The family of Hawthorne Police Department motorcycle Officer Andrew Garton, who was killed May 26 in a collision during a funeral procession for another officer, will be recognized on the field. Garton was the cousin of St. Louis Cardinals catcher Gerald Laird and New York Yankees third baseman Brandon Laird.

Christina-Taylor Green, the youngest of six victims killed in the Jan. 8 shooting Tucson, Ariz., that left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., seriously wounded, also will be remembered during pregame ceremonies, one day after what would have been her 10th birthday. Her father, John Green, a Dodger scout, will be at the game.

Also scheduled to be  honored on the field before the game are therapy dogs Jackson and Sweetheart, who both traveled to New York City just after 9/11 to help families in need.

Donations for the Toys for Tots program will be collected tonight at all Dodger Stadium entrances by members of the U.S. Marine Corps.
