LONG BEACH – Today, African-American community leaders and unemployed workers will hold a press conference in front of state Senator Alan Lowenthal’s district office in Long Beach asking for his support and the support of California lawmakers for the Farmers Field project and SB 292.
The Farmers Field project aims to build a state-of-the-art sports stadium, entertainment, and premier convention center in downtown L.A. by 2015 in an effort to bring the NFL back to Los Angeles. SB 292 is a bill to provide expedited review of expected lawsuits pertaining to Farmers Field before the legislature.
According to the group which includes former Denver Broncos player Glyn Milburn, Rev. Eric Lee of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and Community Coalitions Marqueece Harris Dawson, African-American joblessness is at its highest level in 27 years. Which they say is already above the 13.3 percent average in Los Angeles County.
The group believes that the Farmers Field project will create thousands of local jobs in construction, hotel, tourism, and entertainment that unemployed Blacks can benefit from.
The press conference will take place at Senator Alan Lowenthal’s Long Beach District Office located in Long Beach at 115 Pine Ave today at 12 Noon and is being organized by the LA County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO.
