LOS ANGELES, Calif.–A pair of healthcare organizations in Watts and Long Beach were each awarded federal grants totaling nearly $1 million to assist school-based health initiatives, it was announced today.

The Children’s Clinic in Long Beach will receive $485,000, while the Watts Healthcare Corp. will receive $499,999, according to Rep. Laura Richardson, D-Los Angeles.

“With childhood obesity rates climbing and more children than ever facing long-term chronic health issues, it’s critical that families have Access to affordable health care and educational services,” Richardson said. “School-based health centers are perfect places to address children’s health care needs and for some of our nation’s disadvantaged youth, they are the only healthcare option available.”

The grants were awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through the Affordable Care Act.
