School districts, parks offer youth summer meals

The Compton, Los Angeles and Tehachapi unified school districts are among the local agencies that will offer free summer meals to the public, many beginning this week.

The meals are open to the public, in most cases to youth 18 and younger; interested individuals just need to show up. The details follow.

Compton’s Seamless Summer Feeding program will serve breakfasts and lunch daily at participating elementary and middle schools through July 21 and through July 28 at the high schools.

Breakfast will be served from 7:25 to 7:55 a.m. at Clinton and Dickison elementary schools as well as at Compton, Centennial and Chavez high schools.

Emerson and Roosevelt elementary schools and Roosevelt and Whaley middle schools will serve breakfast from 7:30 to 8 a.m.

Lunch will be served at Clinton from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Compton and Centennial will serve it from 10:37 a.m. to 11:07 a.m.; Chavez High will serve from 11:04 to 11:34 a.m. and again from 12:06 to 12:36 p.m.

At all the other sites, lunch will be served from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Tehachipi Unified School District will feed students through Aug. 11 on a first come, first served basis at Jacobson Middle School, 711 Anita Drive. Breakfast will be served from 8 to 9 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

In the Los Angeles Unified School District, 240 elementary, middle and high schools will provide midmorning, lunch and/or afternoon meals to youth from ages one to 18 from July 6 through Aug. 2. Meals will also be provided at a variety of parks in the county.

In the Antelope Valley, Jackie Robinson Park, 8773 East Avenue R, Littleroock will serve a snack youth 5 to 16 years old at 4 p.m. daily.

Pearblossom Park, 33922 N. 121st East in Pearblossom will offer lunch to youth 18 and younger beginning this week from noon to 2 p.m.

City of Los Angeles offers the “Summer Lunch Program” and provides free nutritious lunches and snacks to youth ages 1 through 18 through August 26. To find a location nearest you, call (818) 546-2383 or (818) 546-2384

Persons with disabilities 19 years and older can also participate as long as they are enrolled in a school or private non-profit formal programs. The program also offers a free snack program at 100 parks citywide. The service is offered during the off-track period.
