LEIMERT PARK, Calif.–An 89-year-old mother and her daughter in her 60s were killed when a pickup truck and car collided and careened into them near Leimert Park, police and the coroner said.

The crash was reported about 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Coliseum Street, said Sgt. Cy Feliciano at the Los Angeles police South Traffic Division.

He said the driver of a 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck, heading south on Crenshaw, tried to left turn at Coliseum Street, but hit a northbound Volkswagen Beetle, Feliciano said.

The impact caused the Beetle to careen northeast, where it struck two pedestrians, an 89-year-old woman and her daughter, who was believed to be in her 60s, the police sergeant said.

Both women were taken to an area hospital where the 89-year-old woman died immediately after her arrival. Her daughter died later in the evening, he said.

Their names will be released after family members are notified, said a spokesperson in the Coroner’s Office.

Although officers said the truck’s driver had failed to yield the right of way to the oncoming VW, the investigation was continuing, and no one has been cited or arrested.

Los Angeles city fire spokesperson David Ortiz said two people in the truck and VW suffered minor injuries.
