Charles E. Blake Pastor of West Angeles Church of God in Christ and Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ was honored with the prestigious man of the year award at the 2010 100 Black Men of Los Angeles Inc. gala held at the Beverly Wilshire on Oct. 15.
Pastor Blake was acknowledged for his outstanding work as a humanitarian and communitarian. As pastor of the 24,000-member congregation of West Angeles Church of God in Christ, Pastor Blake not only provides spiritual guidance, but also oversees 80 programs for the psychological, social and economic growth of the community. He is also chief executive officer of Save Africa’s Children, a program of the Pan African Children’s Fund.
Additional 100 Black Men honorees included: Oprah Winfrey, Woman of the Year; Virgil Roberts, Esq., lifetime achievement award; Congresswoman Diane E. Watson, Lifetime Achievement Award; Rev. Jewett L. Walker, Jr., member of the year; Guillermo L. Hysaw, president’s award; Byron K. Reed, community partner; and Vanessa Bell Calloway, special achievement.
The 100 Black Men concept originated in 1963 in New York City resulting in the formation of the One Hundred Black Men of New York Inc. This group of successful men from the disciplines of business, industry, public affairs, government and other professions decided to combine their skills, experience and resources to improve the quality of life for African Americans and other minorities.
The Los Angeles chapter was founded in 1981, and its members are from the professions of law, medicine, architecture, business, politics and education.
The organization’s programs include focusing on mentoring; education in part through its Young Black Scholars program; health and wellness; and economic development.
