Summer flicks; hot, hot, hot

It looks like the summer will be heating up with some great movies designed to blow your mind. And in this economy, with all the stuff we have on our minds, the movie-making community better bring it.
Granted, we all like good movies, have our favorite actors and actresses regardless of race or ethnicity, but this article will reflect movies that feature Black performers, and those films that cross all boundaries. Trust me; I don’t have enough space to fill you in on all the movie fun you’re in for this summer. Studies have shown, that in tough times, the tough go to the movies.

“Babies” – In theaters Friday–Only Mother’s Day weekend
 Who can resist babies? This documentary takes a look at one year in the life of four babies from Nambia, Japan, Mongolia, and San Francisco. Join the fun and go to www.filminfocus.com to see pictures and clips, plus add your own memories.

“Iron Man 2” – In theaters Friday
Don Cheadle pumps up his role, and Samuel L. Jackson joins Robert Downey Jr. for a battle of cosmic proportions, when he goes against the government, troubled friends and Mickey Rourke.
“Mother and Child” – In theaters Friday
Look for Samuel L. Jackson and Kerry Washington starring in the story of three women facing the drama, heartbreak and joy, when it comes to creating a bond between mother and child.

Sex, Drugs and Rock n’ Roll – In theaters Friday
Naomi Harris (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” “… At Worlds End,” “Ninja Assassins”) stars in the British biopic about the life of Ian Dury.  Crippled by polio at age 10 and told he would amount to nothing, Dury went on to become one of the founders of the British punk movement in the 1970s, producing a string of hits including “Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll.” Harris plays his girlfriend.

“Just Wright” – In theaters May 14
Queen Latifah is back on the big screen along with Common and Paula Patton in every sister’s nightmare. Latifah gets a dream job working as a physical therapists with a man (Common) she doesn’t mean to fall in love with, only to have him fall for her best friend (Patton) who only wants to be a trophy wife. A great all-star line-up including Pam Grier, James Pickens Jr. and Laz Alonso, to name a few, rounds out this fun feature.

Robin Hood – In theaters May 14
The legend of Robin Hood takes on new meaning in this action flick starring Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, and Max von Sydow. Look for epic battles and great acting.

“Shrek Forever After” In theaters May 21
Okay, they say this is the last “Shrek” movie ever … but we’ll see. What’s happening in Far Far Away Land?  Shrek without Fiona? Can Donkey save the day?  Eddie Murphy and all our favorite characters return, but boy, do they have issues.

Sex in the City 2 – In theaters May 27
The girls are back and as feisty and fashionable as ever. This time they’re in Abu Dhabi, one of the richest places on earth, where anything can happen.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time – In theaters May 28
A rogue prince reluctantly joins forces with a mysterious princess to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the sands of time. I don’t know what that means, but from the looks of the movie it’s pretty serious business. An unlikely actor, Jake Gyllenhaal, stars alongside Ben Kingsly in this fast-pace action flick.

Balance your movie-going budget this summer because the fun has just begun. June is hot, hot, hot, with “The A-Team,” “The Karate Kid,” “Toy Story 3,” and “Grown-ups,” just to name a few.
