In an effort to help African American students and their families understand what it takes to get into college, the California State University system will hold its fifth “Super Sunday” at 90 churches around the state.
During the programs, CSU leaders including the chancellor, trustees, presidents, students and others will speak with students and community members about how to apply to the state’s 23 CSU campuses as well as how to obtain financial aid.
Officials will talk about the need to begin preparing for college as soon as middle school, and urge youngsters to enroll in challenging classes that help prepare them for higher education.
Super Sunday is just one part of the CSU’s African American Initiative that is designed to help more Black students qualify for college. Other elements of the program include setting up a six-week summer algebra institute for students and training education counselors in participating churches on how to help students who are interested in college.
Churches that are interested in being part of Super Sunday in the future, should visit the web site http://calstate.edu/supersunday.
