The Washington Involving Neighborhoods (WIN) program has opened a Wellness Center on the campus of Washington Preparatory High School, and the facility is open to families and community members in the 19 feeder schools surrounding the high school.
The center is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the goal is to provide mental, emotional and social services that will help families and students succeed.
The services, which are available free, include reducing alcohol, tobacco and other drug uses among youth; improving student behavior as well as their ability to make smart, sound decisions; improving access to mental health programs; mentoring; group and individual counseling; and promoting positive behavior through an anti-bullying campaign and the Second Step social skills learning option.
There are parenting classes available as well.
Several additional mobile probation officers will be based at the center and will assist the one already working on Washington’s campus, to help relieve the work load and actually make home visits to help students and their families.
Additionally, WIN officials are working with local law enforcement agencies–LAPD, LASD, CHP as well as the Gardena and Hawthorne police departments–to provide them with information cards they can hand out to families, who may need help.
In the near future, the wellness center intends to add a medical component as well, where families can actually see a doctor, dentist and avail themselves of other such services.
There will also be a one-stop kiosk on site where individuals can apply for any social service needed–housing, food stamps, medical ect.–all in one location.
The wellness center is part of the Safe School/Healthy Students Initiative and was funded by a four-year, $8.8 million federal grant. It is a collaborative effort operated in conjunction with Los Angeles County, Cedars Sinai Psychological Trauma Center, Centinela Youth Services, Catholic Big Brothers Big Sister and Public Works Inc. Wellness Center at Washington Preparatory High School is located at 10860 S. Denker Avenue., Los Angeles, 90047, (323) 418-4102, www.win-lausd.ca.schoolloop.com
