Los Angeles, CA — Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church (MBC) is located in South Los Angeles, an area hard hit by the economic downturn. With between 15%-20% unemployment in some areas, according to the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, South L.A. residents are suffering far more severely than other residents in the State and country. Consequently, Mt. Sinai Church has chosen to respond in action.

“We see and feel the needs of our community everyday and decided to put action behind our words,” said Pastor George E. Hurtt.

On Saturday, May 30, Mt. Sinai MBC will host its Saturday Service-Community Day Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We decided to hold the event and our worship services on Saturday in an effort to try and reach people where they are,” said Hurtt.

The fair will feature food, fun and activities for children as well as provide much needed information and resources on health, housing and employment.  A one-hour worship service will be held at 5 p.m. following the fair.

The Saturday Service-Community Day provides the members of Mt. Sinai an opportunity to show the love of Christ and meet tangible needs of the local community.  Employment information from LAPD, IRS, Probation Department and other employers will be available.
Other employment resources include resume writing services and employment training.  A limited amount of clothing suitable for interviews will be distributed.

Health services such as AIDS testing, referrals for prostate cancer screening test, information on obtaining Medicare and fitness coaching will be on hand.  Nurses from King Drew Medical Center will conduct onsite testing for diabetes, cholesterol and high blood pressure. Information on housing assistance such as refinancing, loan modification and foreclosure prevention will be available.  There will also be a discussion on President Obama’s stimulus package.

Event partners include: To Help Everyone (T.H.E.) Clinic, Real Men Cook Foundation, Palms Residential Care Facility, LA Cares, LA Employment Development Department, LAPD, LA County Fire Department, Urban League, Los Angeles Neighborhood Housing Services, Southern California Edison, Korean Churches for Community Development, and LA Housing Authority.
Community Day is the second in a series of four special Saturday Services developed by Mt. Sinai in accordance with The Great Commission.  The first Saturday Service on March 28 drew a crowd of nearly 400 and included an outreach auction where over 100 gifts were given away.  The next Saturday Service on August 29, will focus on Back to School resources and activities.

Pastor George E. Hurtt and the Mt. Sinai family invite everyone to enjoy the festivities and benefit from the many resources available at the special Saturday Service Community Day Fair on May 30.  Mt. Sinai has two Sunday services at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.  A mid-week service is held on Wednesdays at 7 p.m.  Mt. Sinai is located at 3669 W. 54th St. in Los Angeles.
