The Los Angeles Police Department has created a way for residents to anonymously text crime tips via cell phone and the department’s web site.
The department is particularly hoping anyone with information on the murder of Sheriff’s Deputy Juan Escalante or the so-called Grim Sleeper serial killer, to send in the information.
Tipsters can send a text message to CRIMES–274637 –and then type LAPD and their message, which is then routed through a national system and sent to Los Angeles police. Callers receive a reply with an alias that can be used if officers need additional information.
The text messaging system is already being used by authorities in New York and Boston.
