Andre Young Jr., son of local rapper/producer Dr. Dre (Andre Young Sr.) was found unresponsive by his mother, Jenita Porter, on Saturday at 10:24 a.m. in the home that they shared in Woodland Hills. Porter immediately called paramedics. Young was reportedly out with friends the previous night and was found in his bed.
Los Angeles County coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter said that an autopsy had been completed but that determination of the cause of death was deferred pending the outcome of tests, including toxicology.
Dr. Dre released a statement via publicist Lori Earl, “Dr. Dre is mourning the loss of his son Andre Young Jr. Please respect his family’s grief and privacy at this time.”
Dr. Dre most recently made the Forbes top 10 list (Aug. 18, 2008) of “Hip Hop’s Cash Kings,” coming in at No. 9 at $15 million earnings last year. His income stream is largely from royalties which are still strong after two decades. The Compton native founded the rap group NWA and has produced hits for Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent and more.
