Police report that a 13-year-old-cousin of an 8-year-old who was shot and killed while playing outside a South Los Angeles apartment building last week, was charged Tuesday with her murder.
Sanders was playing with her younger brother and other children behind an iron gate near the stairwell of an apartment building at East 76th and South San Pedro Streets, when she was shot and killed last Wednesday evening at 8:34 p.m.
The cousin was allegedly aiming at a man who was also at the scene. Sanders was the only one hit by a stray bullet, which hit her in the chest.
Deputy District Attorney Henry Kerner said the cousin, whose name is being withheld because he is a minor, was charged with one count each of murder and attempted murder.?
The force of the shot pushed Jasmine back against the stairs, where her mother, 28-year-old Shadonna Kinney, came down and picked her up. Kinney carried Jasmine upstairs to her apartment, where she and a neighbor applied pressure to the chest wound in an attempt to stop the bleeding.
Jasmine was rushed to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center but died at the hospital.
Police said that the shooting, which occurred about two blocks away from the LAPD’s 77th Street Division station, was gang-related. Residents in the apartment complex said that the incident was the fifth shooting in the last week.
Kinney, who had moved with her family into the apartment complex three weeks ago, said her daughter was a student at 75th Street Elementary School and was dedicated to her studies. Her mother said that when Jasmine was trying to get her brothers to behave when they were fighting, she would say, “You better listen to mama, I’m getting my education.”
Services are scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. Donations to assist in the burial costs can be made through Project Cry No More by calling (310) 764-0165.
