Second Baptist Church of Los Angeles, the city’s oldest African American Baptist Church, is inviting members of the greater Los Angeles community to participate in their Commemorative Brick Patio Project. Participants will be able to sponsor one or more bricks engraved in honor of a special person, living or deceased.
The Commemorative Brick Patio project is part of Second Baptist’s restoration and renovation of the 82-year-old church building, located in the historic Central Avenue District of Los Angeles. Renowned African American architect Paul R. Williams originally designed the building in the 1920s. The Commemorative Brick Patio will pave the entrance to a newly-designed extension to the building, housing an elevator and lobby where the congregation and guests can gather before and after worship services.
“A walkway of engraved bricks containing messages, tributes, and honors will allow one to establish a link with the past, present, and future,” remarks Senior Pastor William S. Epps. This lasting gesture makes “a meaningful mark of distinction,” he says.
Architect Brad McDonald, of Reveal Studios, Inc., and historian Alison Jefferson, of the Historic Resources Group, have been working with a committee of Second Baptist’s congregants in selecting contemporary design elements that retain the historic essence of the church.
