“Dr. Dan,” as he was affectionately known by his congregation, Religious Science members across the nation and people of the community, was instrumental in leading several young people to the ministry. He was also active in the community in several campaigns and other programs.
He founded Guidance Church on Jan. 15, 1967, following his tenure as pastor of June Cobb Church of Religious Science. Dr. Dan served Guidance until his retirement in 2004. His wife, Mrs. Vernell Morgan supported him in his ministry and served as organist.
Dr. Dan held his first worship service in the Leimert Theater and later at a facility on Crenshaw Boulevard at 43rd Street for two years. He led the congregation in its present edifice on Sept. 7, 1970. With rapid growth, the Youth Building was added on Aug. 5, 1973, and additional property adjacent to the church was purchased.
Science of Mind accredited class work led by Dr. Dan, marked the progress of the church that was soon moved to regular classrooms of the Southwest Chapter of the Institute of Religious Science.
Dr. Dan often said, “Money spent on myself may be a millstone about my neck; money spent on others may give me wings like the angels.”
The Rev. Nirvana Gayle, the senior minister, will participate in Dr. Dan’s celebration of life to be held on Saturday, May 24, at 2 p.m., at Founder’s Church of Religious Science, 3281 W. Sixth St. in Los Angeles.
