In February 2000, LAUSD Board of Education members supported California State Senate Bill 984 which established the birthday of Cesar Chavez as a state holiday. The bill became law in August of that year. Currently, LAUSD celebrates the late civil rights leader by honoring the State-established Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning, created for public school children and to promote service to the communities of California in honor of the life and work of Cesar Chavez.
This resolution directs Superintendent of Schools David L. Brewer III to work with all school administrators, teachers and community to implement the full intent of the State-established Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning.
