Theres an old adage that experience is the best teacher.
And when it comes to experience, former Los Angeles postmaster James Smith more than fits the bill.
Smith, who recently retired as postmaster and served 44 years with the post office, launched Executive Communication Services Inc., last month. ECS is a direct mailing business that offers creative and direct mail solutions as well as e-commerce, reprographic and printing services.
We are a one stop direct mail solution firm, said Smith. We print and sort the mail piece and shepherd it through the mailing house to ensure it is delivered to the client. We have the ability to monitor and track all mailing pieces to keep our clients apprised of their mailing, said Smith, who said that ECS offers printing of envelopes, post cards, and flyers. In short, anything that is needed to ensure the success of a mail operation, we produce, said Smith.
Smith said the first step in ensuring his client receives the best service for their direct mailing pieces is sitting down with the customer and evaluating what their needs are. Once we find out their needs, we handle everything from creating a clients idea to developing their mail piece. Then we make recommendations as to how they can save on costs and be more efficient with their direct mailing needs.
I always wanted to have my own business, said Smith, who during his 40-plus years as a career postal employee climbed the ladder to become postmaster. But it was his stint as the post offices manager of marketing that helped Smith gain valuable experience in marketing solutions. Being the manager of marketing gave me a chance to see first hand the needs of the community, said Smith.
Since launching his direct mail company, Smith said he has been inundated with requests from clients familiar with his excellent reputation and standing in the postal community. Clients include Faithful Central Baptist Church, Assemblyman Mervyn Dymally, Inglewood Mayor Roosevelt Dorn, Dakota Communications founder Kerman Maddox, Councilman Herb Wesson and Compton Councilman Isadore Hall.
Maddox has been especially helpful in giving me advice about my business, said Smith. I value his input.
We are focusing on the political and religious community as well as nonprofit and civic organizations, said Smith.
I am truly humbled and touched by the community who is supporting me, said Smith. Im going to provide excellent service, great value and competitive prices. My goal is to exceed every clients expectation.
