The first round of the boys’ City Section playoff bracket went nearly as expected. The only upset was No. 12 Cleveland over No. 5 Palisades 68-64.

Top-seeded Taft, who was barred from post-season play last season because of ineligible players, had an easy 85-43 victory over Manual Arts. Bryce Smith scored 25 points, which included seven three-pointers. Larry Drew Jr. added 19 points for Taft.
No. 2 Westchester did not have any problems with No. 15 Birmingham, winning 85-46.
No. 3 Fairfax defeated No. 14 Van Nuys 85-62. Renardo Sidney scored 25 points, and Chris Solomon added 22 for Fairfax.
No. 4 Fremont was nearly upset by No. 13 King Drew. Fremont trailed by six points with less than three minutes to play, but they scored 10 unanswered points and outscored King Drew 17-4 down the stretch. Tony Freeland scored 22 points for Fremont. Laron Armstead added 18 points, and Savion Udeah 17 points.
No. 6 Washington also had a come-from-behind victory. Trailing by six points midway through the fourth period, Washington went on a 22-15 run to win the game 54-46. Skyler Veden scored 30 points for Washington.
No. 10 Crenshaw defeated No. 7 Jordan 87-65. Raynaul Baker scored 20 points and William Taylor added 17 for Crenshaw. Jordan’s James Boyd scored 36 points in the loss.
No. 8 Dorsey and No. 9 Gardena had to go to overtime to settle their first-round game, in which Dorsey won 96-89. Brian Stewart scored 18 points, while Sean Hampton scored 17 points, and Lee Lark and Lonnie Biggs scored 16 points each for Dorsey.
The quarter-final round will be played on Friday, February 22, and the title game will be played March 1 at the Sports Arena.
In the Southern Section, No. 1 seed Dominguez defeated Chaminade 97-60 in the opening round of the Division I-AA playoffs. Jordan Hamilton scored 29 points and Myron Green added 17 for Dominguez.
No. 4 Compton defeated Verbum Dei 74-57. Demar Derozan scored 40 points, and Edgar Garibay added 13 points and 16 rebounds for Compton.
In Division II-AA, No. 2 Serra defeated Burbank 80-63. Kevin Johnson scored 21 points in the game for Serra.
In Division III-AAA, No. 2 Price defeated Mark Keppel 56-37. Kenny Albritton scored 17 points for Price.
In the girls’ City Section bracket top seeding Chatsworth literally made quick work of No. 16 Banning. Leading 31-6 with 5:20 seconds remaining in the second period, Banning walked off the court and left. Several spectators were removed from the gym for abusive language toward the referees. Banning coach Nicole Perkins said that she felt that it was an unsafe environment for her players.
No. 2 Washington held off No. 15 Birmingham 55-49.
No. 3 Narbonne routed No. 14 Venice 87-41. Reiko Thomas scored 27 points, and Tipesa Moorer added 20 for Narbonne.
No. 4 Fairfax defeated No. 9 Crenshaw 53-50. Donetta Rey scored 22 points for Crenshaw in the loss.
No. 5 Taft, who won the City title last season, defeated No. 10 Carson 48-44.
No. 6 Granada Hills defeated No. 11 Garfield 62-51, No. 9 Wilson defeated No. 8 Poly 72-55, and No. 10 Monroe defeated No. 7 Grant 55-49.
In the Southern Section No. 1 Long Beach Poly, No. 2 Long Beach Millikan, and No. 5 Lynwood had easy wins in their first-round Division I-AA games.
Poly defeated Moorpark 77-21. Jasmine Dixon scored 15 points in the victory.
Millikan defeated Tustin 79-38. Ashley Mitchell scored 22 points, and Arizona State-bound Kalena Tutt added 10 rebounds and 10 block shots.
Lynwood routed Rosary 59-35. Heather Pilcher scored 17 points.
No. 8 Inglewood defeated St. Bonaventure 68-27 in the opening round of the Division II-AA playoffs. Tayler Champion scored 17 points, 15 rebounds, and had four block shots in the victory.
