A shooting involving one or more sheriff's deputies in the Pearblossom area southeast of Palmdale left a man dead.

The shooting occurred about 6:45 a.m. Feb. 23 in the 13000 block of Pearblossom Highway, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies were sent to the location on a report of an “assault with a deadly weapon, person with a knife, at one of the businesses,” Sheriff's Lt. Patricia Thomas told reporters at the scene. The man was later identified as Joseph Henson. His age was unknown at press time.

The deputies drove around looking for him, and when they found him, the shooting occurred, Thomas said.

“The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased,” Thomas said.

Thomas said the fatally wounded man had “a sharp object,” but she declined to elaborate.

Information on the man's identity was not immediately available. The shooting occurred at or near a gas station, according to a report from the scene.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS. Tipsters may also use the website http://lacrimestoppers.org.
